There are very few “celebrities” I want to meet. It’s not something that appeals to me, and yet, I find myself strangely drawn to Brant Hansen. Perhaps it’s his love of Tolkien or baby animals. Perhaps it’s his quirky sense of humor. Or perhaps it’s the fact that he and i speak similarly when it comes to relationships and God and His kingdom. Whatever the case is, when he put out a call for people to get early access to his newest book in order to review, I practically jumped out of my seat and filled the google form out as quickly as I could. I knew I’d read this book regardless.
I’m glad, beyond measure, that I read this book. As I was reading it, or more accurately, devouring it, I would turn over and read excerpts to my husband. When I realized I could pre-order it, I got multiple copies for gifts. Hansen’s prose is extraordinary and his ability to relate to just about everybody, from “neurotypical” to “neuro-atypical,” is refreshing (if the modern church makes sense, though, this really isn’t the book for you. That’s not just my disclaimer. It’s his too!)
And, if I’m gonna be 100% honest, he approaches mental disorder, whether it be depression or anxiety or Asperger’s, in a way that doesn’t put blame on the person or God, but as a result of a fallen world where science and medicine, though not necessarily a “cure,” are a gift from God, allowing God to work through those areas. Hansen is an ambassador for Cure International, a group of charitable hospitals serving 29 countries with surgeries to help provide a future to children who previously had none, and in and through this ministry, he sees a God who heals, and that means a lot.
I’ve been quoting this book for the last two to three months, wishing I could share my copy with the world, but since it releases TOMORROW, now is the time to pre-order it (currently sitting under $12… list price is $16.99). If you do read it, tell me your thoughts and join me in a quote-a-palooza!
